Oxford United 0 Spurs 3 (Pre-season)

Spurs continued their pre-season preparations by overcoming Oxford United.

After seasons of deliberation, they had finally signed Bobby Zamora from Brighton for a fee of £1.5 million two days previously. He made his debut in this game and played in the first half.

He immediately showed his potential by scoring twice, first after twenty minutes and then on the stroke of half-time. He was replaced for the second half by Robbie Keane who scored the third.

Subsequent events were to suggest that Zamora was best suited to scoring against lower league opposition. A player of great heart, his first touch often let him down and he went to West Ham the following January as part of the Jermain Defoe transfer.

Spurs 4 Oxford United 2 FA Cup 4th Round

Spurs' progress in the Cup continued with this 4th Round victory thanks to an outstanding performance from Paul Gascoigne. The game marked a re-surgence in Gascoigne’s form as he displayed all his skills and it continued throughout the Cup run, in spite of injury problems as he played on while in need of a hernia operation.

He scored two goals against Oxford and created the other two which were scored by Gary Lineker and Gary Mabbutt.

Steve Perryman & FA Cup

This day marked the final appearance of captain Steve Perryman for Tottenham Hotspur, thw club he had joined as a boy and served for nineteen years.  He made his 654th League appearance in Spurs colours as the team lost 1-2 at home to Liverpool.  Chris Waddle scored Spurs' goal.

In total he made 1014 full appearances for Spurs and 8 as substitute.  He was a loyal servant to the club turning professional in 1969 and playing regularly for 17 years. He was a member of Nicholson's successful team in 1970s and captained the team to FA Cup success under Keith Burkinshaw in 1980s. He missed the EUFA Cup win in 1984 because of suspension, but received a medal as Ossie Ardiles insisted he have his.

A true and worthy Spurs 'Legend.'

He was transferred to Oxford for £50,000, later returning as Assistant Manager under Ossie Ardiles. This was short lived but he had a successful period managing in Japan.
