Spurs Away Record against QPR

For Spurs, requiring three points to re-ignite their Champions League challenge, a visit to Loftus Road is not the most appealing of venues where they have only won on five occasions in twenty one previous meetings.  The task, even ignoring Spurs own poor recent form, will be made even more difficult with Queen's Park Rangers need for points to avoid an immediate return to Championship football next season.

Spurs and Queen's Park Rangers first met in the 2nd Division in season 1948-49 following QPR's promotion.  The first match at Loftus Road in March, 1949 ended in a scoreless draw as Spurs finished the season in 5th place, once again missing out on promotion.  Many of the players who were to become the famous 'Push and Run' team of 1949 on, were already at White Hart Lane - Ted Ditchburn, Bill Nicholson, Ron Burgess, Len Duquemin, Eddie Baily and others - but it was to take a change of manager at the end of the season when Arthur Rowe replaced Joe Hulme, for all of the pieces to fall into place.

The following season Spurs had their first success in West London with a 2 - 0 victory in April, 1950 which ensured their promotion to the 1st Division for the first time since 1934-35, an absence of fifteen years.  While QPR were battling against relegation, it was an exciting match, which a newspaper report of the time described as having 'the characteristics of a cup-tie.  It was fast, it was exciting and there was a sprinkling of really good football'. 

Spurs went ahead after seventeen minutes when Les Medley scored and secured their victory when Eddie Baily added a second with fifteen minutes remaining.

The clubs didn't meet again until 1968-69 when QPR were promoted to the 1st Division for the first time in their history following a meteoric rise from the 3rd Division and success in the League Cup as a 3rd Division side in 1967.

The most notable fact from this match was that the Morgan twins, Ian and Roger, who had been part of the QPR success story of previous years were on opposite sides as Roger had joined Spurs the previous February for a fee of £110,000.  QPR were relegated at the end of the season and didn't to the 1st Division until 1973.

A vital win for Spurs in a season of turmoil.  Bill Nicholson had resigned the previous August and was replaced by Terry Neill.  in a difficult year Spurs were in a constant battle against relegation and the points gained at Loftus Road when new signing John Duncan who had cost £140,000 when signed from Dundee, scored the only goal of the match, helped secure their survival come the end of the season.  It was Spurs second successive victory, having beaten Wolves 3 - 0 the previous day.  Duncan scored after 23 minutes but the win came as the result of a strong defensive display and an outstanding performance from Pat Jennings.

Duncan again scored Spurs only goal but it wasn't enough to gain any points and come the end of the season Spurs, now under Keith Burkinshaw, were unable to avoid relegation.

The Boxing Day fixture came a few days after the humiliating five goal home defeat to Arsenal but Spurs re-grouped to take a point with goals from Colin Lee and a Peter Taylor penalty.  QPR were relegated at the end of the season but returned in 1983.

Spurs finished the season in 8th position but newly promoted QPR were three places above them.  Steve Archibald scored Spurs only goal in one of his last games for the club as he joined Terry Venables at Barcelona in the summer.  Archibald had an excellent finale to his time at Spurs, scoring five goals in his last five matches.

In a disappointing season, Spurs finished with a flourish, winning five of the last seven games and scoring fourteen goals in the final three games.  Such improved form was not enough to save Peter Shreeve from the sack and he was replaced by David Pleat.

Teddy Sheringham maintained his record of scoring at Loftus Road, having been responsible for all of Spurs goals in their previous three visits.  In the last match the two clubs played at QPR, the home side had a two goal advantage early in the second half, only for Sheringham to score with a penalty two minutes later.  The turn around continued in the second half with two goals from in a minute from Jason Dozzell and Sheringham to give Gerry Francis victory over his former club.

16th August, 1980

Spurs 2 Nottingham Forest 0 (1st Division)

The opening day of the season with the usual high expectations. For the previous two seasons Spurs were short of a goal scorer but during the summer Keith Burkinshaw signed two players in an attempt to resolve this problem.

Steve Archibald was signed from Aberdeen and Garth Crooks came from Stoke City and a very successful partnership it was to prove, setting Spurs on the way to further success. Both made their debuts in this game and Crooks scored the second goal, Hoddle having given Spurs the lead with a penalty.

Archibald scored in the next game, Crooks scored twice and another in his third game. The team then hit a difficult spell not scoring for the next four games but they had shown their worth.

10th June, 1981

Trabzonspor 0 Spurs 4 (Friendly)

After winning the F.A.Cup Spurs played three games in Bahrain and Kuwait at the end of May, winning all of them.

In mid-June they went to Turkey for two games which they also won convincingly. For this game Steve Archibald was the only member of the Cup winning team not to play. Mark Falco replaced him and scored one of the goals, the others being scored by Ricky Villa, Ossie Ardiles and Garth Crooks.

Spurs 1 RSC Anderlect 1 UEFA CUP FINAL (2nd Leg) (aet) [Won 4-3 on penalties]

The 1st Leg in Belgium had ended 1-1, thanks to a Paul Miller goal and this match developed into a titanic struggle as Anderlect went ahead on the hour. Spurs were without Ray Clemence and Glenn Hoddle injured while Steve Perryman suspended after being booked in the first game.

Their stand-in Captain, Graham Roberts, now became their inspiration and drove them forward in search of the equaliser. It came six minutes from time when from a corner, Ossie Ardiles hit the bar and the ball rebounded to Roberts who blasted it home.

Extra time was tense and then the penalty shoot-out brought forward and unexpected new hero, Tony Parks.

Roberts led by example and scored the first penalty, then Parks deputising for Clemence, saved the first penalty and after Danny Thomas had missed what would have been the winning score he saved the final shot before setting off on a jubilant stampede across the WHL pitch followed by his exultant team mates. The other penalties were scored by Mark Falco, Gary Stevens and Steve Archibald.

Spurs had won the trophy for their departing manager, Keith Burkinshaw and the celebrations went on long into the night.

Spurs in History - 11th April

11th April, 1981

Spurs 2 Wolverhampton Wanderers 2 (aet) F.A.Cup Semi-Final at Hillsborough.

Spurs were on their way to Wembley until the referee intervened and awarded Wolves a last minute penalty for a fair tackle by Glenn Hoddle on Hibbitt who fell to the ground. Wolves equalised and extra time remained goalless.

Spurs had scored through Steve Archibald after four minutes but Wolves equalised a minute later. Just before half-time, Hoddle gave Spurs the lead from a free kick, that could justifiably have been a penalty. Spurs defended resolutely until the referee played his part but then we would have missed the excitement of the replay at Highbury.

13th March, 1982

Liverpool 3 Spurs 1(aet) LEAGUE/MILK CUP FINAL at Wembley.

Thirteenth, unlucky for some and certainly for Spurs in their centenary year. Two amazing records finally came to an end in this game – unbeaten in domestic Cup Finals and unbeaten at Wembley.

However, it looked to be going so well with Steve Archibald giving Spurs the lead after 11 minutes. Liverpool pressed but the Spurs defence was holding firm and then with four minutes remaining Archibald had a chance to secure victory but delayed his shot and the chance was gone. Within a minute Liverpool had equalised and in extra time they scored twice more against a deflated Spurs team. However, Spurs were still looking for success in the League, the F.A.Cup and in Europe.

13th March, 1936

On this day, one six line paragraph in the Weekly Herald, headlined 'On Trial' stated:

"Spurs are giving a month's trial to an amateur Wm. E. Nicholson, an inside right of Scarborough Working Man's Club. He recently celebrated his 17th birthday. His height is 5ft 8 ins and weight 10st 12 lbs."

And so Bill Nicholson arrived at Tottenham Hotspur where he served with distintion as a payer, coach and manager. He later returned as Consultant and became Club President.

Spurs went into this game under strength due to injuries to a number of key players.  Steve Perryman, Glenn Hoddle, Graham Roberts, Chris Hughton and Tony Galvin were missing, being replaced by young players and squad members.  They performed creditably with Steve Archibald scoring their goal after only three minutes and Garry Brooke hitting the bar.

Spurs also had two possible penalty appeals turned down but in the second half Bayern scored the important away goal following a poor clearance.

Bayern Munich 4 Spurs 1 European Cup Winners’ Cup 2nd Round (2nd Leg)

The away leg proved too much for Spurs as they lost 1 - 4 on a foggy night in Munich.  It was so bad that the match should have been postponed.  Conditions were poor before the game and deteriorated during it.  So bad was it that spectators at either end couldn't see beyond the half way line and goal scorer Chris Hughton had to describe his goal to the Spurs fans he met at the airport on the way home. None of them had seen it and Spurs' European campaign ended earlier than anticipated.

Spurs in History - 19th October

Spurs produced their best performance of the season in what had been regarded as a tricky UEFA Cup group game in Turkey.  A goal in each half saw Spurs win comfortably and in the latter stages if they had taken their chances, the win could have been even more convincing.  Spurs settled quickly and went ahead after 31 minutes when Hossam Ghaly was put through by Berbatov with only the goalkeeper to beat.  He delayed his shot and the goalkeeper blocked it but the ball rebounded onto Ghaly and into the net.  It was his first goal for Spurs and gave them a deserved half-time lead.

At the start of the second half the home team increased the pressure but with Michael Dawson and Ledley King comfortable in central defence and the midfield players working tirelessly, Spurs maintained control and after 63 minutes Dimitar Berbatov showed why Spurs paid the £11 million transfer fee for him.  Put through from a pass by Robbie Keane, he took on the defender and went round the goalkeeper and with defenders covering coolly scored Spurs second to secure victory.

A more convincing win could have been achieved if Spurs had taken all their chances.  Berbatov again pressured the defender and set up Keane who hit the bar, later Keane blazed over when through on goal and Jermain Defoe shot wide with his first touch in the final moments.

Jermaine Jenas worked tirelessly, covering acres of ground, Berbatov showed his class and Dawson and King controlled the defence.  Paul Robinson showed his class with comfortable saves and a great double save from a free kick late in the first half.

A very pleasing performance and result with Spurs top of the group and looking forward to more European success.

19th October, 1983

Spurs 4 Feyenoord 2 (UEFA Cup 2nd Round (1st Leg)

The game matched Glenn Hoddle against an ageing Johan Cryff in a head to head contest.  It was the younger star who was to stamp his class on the match as Cryff failed to live with Hoddle’s creativity and control.

Spurs were four ahead by half-time and Glenn Hoddle had played a part in all of the goals.  He controlled the game and Spurs were supreme, going ahead after eight minutes through Steve Archibald.  Ten minutes later a Hoddle cross was headed in by Tony Galvin.  Archibald scored his second five minutes later with Galvin getting his second five minutes before half-time from a forty yard Hoddle pass.

In the second half Feyenoord came more into the game but Hoddle had displayed his master class and Spurs were almost assured of qualification to the next round.
