Spurs in History - 17th August

17th August, 1996

Blackburn Rovers 0 Spurs 2

A good opening to the Premiership season but at a high cost.

The good result and three points were overshadowed by the injury to Captain and inspiration, Gary Mabbutt. After twenty minutes of the first half he broke his leg and was to be ruled out for the rest of the season.

At the time of the injury the game was scoreless. However, thirteen minutes later Chris Armstrong gave Spurs the lead and then doubled the score mid-way through the second half. In spite of Mabbutt’s injury and the injury of his replacement within nine minutes, Spurs managed to re-organise themselves and deservedly won the three points.

Chris Armstrong Signs for Tottenham Hotspur

Chris Armstrong was signed from Crystal Palace for a fee of £4.5 million to become Spurs most expensive player.

He had been bought to replace Jurgen Klinsmann who had returned to Germany after only one season at White Hart Lane. The initial reaction was not very positive with newspaper reports of Teddy Sheringham being less than complimentary about his new striking partner.

However, he did form a very effective partnership with Sheringham but he had an impossible task to try to replace Klinsmann in the hearts of the supporters.

His career at Spurs ended when he was released in 2002 following a long period of injury.

Spurs in History - 28th February

28th February, 1996

Nottingham Forest 2 Spurs 2

Nine days earlier this F.A.Cup 5th Round tie was abandoned after 15 minutes because of snow. At the second attempt, Forest took an early fourth minute lead but Spurs managed to equalise through Chris Armstrong on eight minutes. Armstrong’s second goal after 28 minutes put Spurs ahead before succumbing to a second superbly struck free-kick in the 72nd minute to take the tie to a replay at White Hart Lane on the Saturday of the 6th Round matches.
