Spurs in History - 6th May

6th May, 1961

'The Double' Winners

Spurs 2 Leicester City 0 F.A.CUP FINAL at Wembley.

Spurs became the first club to win ‘The Double’ in the 20th Century. Having won the League, Spurs won the cup in unspectacular style, overcoming a team who had won at White Hart Lane earlier in the season.

The tension of the day prevented Spurs from performing as they had on many occasions during their memorable season and it was not until late in the game that Spurs took control.

Leicester overcame the early loss of their full back, Chalmers, to injury and battled gamely as he ‘hobbled’ on the wing. Bobby Smith scored a ‘magnificent solo goal’ after 69 minutes and Terry Dyson ensured victory seven minutes later with a headed goal from Smith’s cross.

Spurs in History - 22nd March

22nd March, 1961

Spurs 1 Newcastle United 2 (1st Division)

Even the ‘Double’ winning team could have their off days. Newcastle, facing relegation, were clinging on in the first half with their goalkeeper having a starring role.

At half-time Spurs were only one ahead through a goal from Les Allen. To make matters worse Danny Blanchflower had missed a penalty and then in the second half Newcastle began to come into the game and scored after an hour. With little over ten minutes left they took the lead, holding on for an unexpected victory.

Spurs in History - 4th February

4th February, 1961

Spurs 2 Leicester City 3 (1st Division)

The ‘Double’ winning season included many records and this game marked the first home defeat suffered by the team. Spurs had won all but two of those thirteen League games but this game proved one too many.

Leicester took the lead after thirty minutes. Les Allen equalised within five minutes but City scored again three minutes later. Immediately after half time, Spurs were level through a Danny Blanchflower penalty but when Leicester regained the lead, Spurs were unable to reply.

Although suffering their second defeat in three games, Spurs were still eight points ahead of Wolves with Sheffield Wednesday third.
