Spurs in History - 27th May

27th May, 1982

Spurs 1 Queens Park Rangers 0 F.A.CUP FINAL REPLAY at Wembley.

This was Spurs 66th competitive game of the season and Captain Steve Perryman had been an ever present. It was hoped that the replay would be more entertaining than the first game and Spurs started brightly, taking the lead from a Glenn Hoddle penalty after Graham Roberts had been brought down on a strong run from midfield.

Spurs controlled the game without looking like adding to the score but in the second half Q.P.R. came at Spurs who had to defend doggedly with Ray Clemence making a number of good saves.

In the end Spurs were just relieved to hold on and have some reward for their long and exhausting season. They finished fourth in the League, reached the Final of the League Cup losing to Liverpool in extra time and were defeated in the semi-final of the European Cup Winners Cup by Barcelona. They retained the FA Cup and were still undefeated in seven F.A.Cup Finals, the defeat by Liverpool being their first defeat in a domestic Cup Final and their first in a Final at Wembley.

Spurs in History - 14th May

14th May, 1981

Spurs 3 Manchester City 2 F.A.CUP FINAL REPLAY at Wembley.

If the first match was a disappointment, the Replay made up for it. Many thought that Ricky Villa had missed his chance in that game but Keith Burkinshaw kept faith in him and he was repaid handsomely.

Within seven minutes Villa had given Spurs the lead but this only lasted three minutes as City equalised with a spectacular goal. Both teams were creating chances and City went ahead five minutes into the second half from a penalty.

The match became tense with tackles flying in on both sides. In the 71st minute Spurs equalised with a goal from Crooks.

Seven minutes later, Ricky Villa stepped forward and dribbled around and through the City defence to score the most incredible Cup Final winner of all time – Saturday’s ‘failure’ had become the Hero with a never to be forgotten goal.

Non-League Spurs FA Cup Winners

Spurs 3 Sheffield United 1 F.A.CUP FINAL REPLAY at Bolton

Only 20,740 were present to see Spurs go a goal behind, five minutes before half-time. The goal had been against the run of play and Spurs continued to take the game to United and equalised after 55 minutes from John Cameron.

Spurs then went ahead when winger Smith scored and Sandy Brown ensured victory with a header from the third of three quick corners, with seven minutes remaining.

Brown had become the first player to score in every round of the Cup, scoring 15 goals. On the final whistle joyous Spurs fans invaded the pitch and when the team returned to London at 1.00am the next morning, the fans who had been waiting for three hours, gave them a tremendous reception.

Spurs in History - 12th April

Two early goals from Terry Venables set Spurs up in this FA Cup Replay against Birmingham City

12th April, 1967

Spurs 6 Birmingham City 0 F.A.Cup 6th Round Replay

The first game the previous weekend had remained scoreless as 2nd Division Birmingham had battled bravely to deny Spurs. The nearest they had come to scoring was late on when Pat Jennings in catching an awkward dropping centre from under the bar, let it slip from his grasp and had City claiming a goal but the referee disagreed.

The replay saw Spurs in total control. Terry Venables scored twice, after 90 seconds and after 18 minutes. Two minutes later Alan Gilzean scored the third. In th second half, Jimmy Greaves (2) and Frank Saul completed the goal feast.

Nottingham Forest awaited Spurs in the semi-final clash to be played at Hillsborough.

Tottenham Hotspur v Chelsea FA Cup 6th Round Replay

Chelsea Replay Preview

Monday, 19th March, 2007 KO: 8.05pm

Spurs' last 8 games: W W D W W W W W (it looks great!)

Referee: Howard Webb

The season just keeps rolling on and the next game is always the most important as was the case with Watford on Saturday, a job well done. But now this really is the BIG one. Chelsea were relieved to leave Stamford Bridge with a draw and have another chance at White Hart Lane while Spurs were the disappointed side, that they hadn’t finished off what they had so nearly achieved.

Following the goal-fest in the first game, the replay might be a more cagy affair with only a goal in it. Chelsea will have no problem with coming to Tottenham - they will be confident of getting a result and will be quite happy to grind out a score if that’s what’s necessary, as they have done on occasions in the League and European competitions. Whether that type of game would suit Spurs is uncertain but they must set aside any lingering thoughts that they have missed their best opportunity and take confidence from their good form and build on what they achieved a week ago.

Since the teams last met a week ago, both have completed routine victories to maintain their recent good form – Spurs reaching the UEFA Cup Q/F against SC Braga and taking three points from Watford, while Chelsea defeated Man City (a) 1-0 (Lampard (pen)) and Sheffield United (h) 3-0 (Shevchenko, Kalou, Ballack).

Both teams should see players returning, Robinson, Keane and Jenas for Spurs, while Terry and Makelele will be looking to bring greater stability to what was a very suspect Chelsea defence last Sunday. However, Terry and the other Chelsea defenders must be concerned about facing Berbatov especially in his current form and supported by Keane, Lennon and Jenas they could have a busy evening.

The power of the Chelsea midfield of Lampard, Ballack, Essien and Robben will be a constant threat to Spurs but they coped well on Sunday and managed to limit Drogba’s opportunities to influence the game. Total concentration and commitment will again be necessary if Spurs are to be successful. Spurs’ inability to keep a ‘clean sheet’ is a source of encouragement to the opposition who must always feel that they have a chance to score. This would be a very good time to keep the opposition at bay and look to our strike force to make it a great FA Cup night at White Hart Lane.

Past results have no bearing on this match but the clubs have met in the FA Cup at White Hart Lane on three occasions. Spurs won the 1957 encounter 4-0, the 1963 game was drawn 1-1 and Chelsea reversed the 1957 score in the most recent game in the 6th Round in 2002.

In recent weeks Spurs have taken a massive step forward, they are now closing in on fourth or fifth in the Premiership, their Cup progress has been exciting and they have been playing in a style more reminiscent of Tottenham of old. This is the big test – can they overcome Chelsea to show that they are really there or will it be a case of so near but not quite good enough. In the Carling Cup semi-final for thirty minutes, it looked as if it had all come together but with the departure of Berbatov, so went Spurs chances. Berbatov is crucial to Spurs, but those around him must ensure they play their part to achieve the success so craved at Spurs.

Both teams are showing good form, Chelsea undefeated in domestic competitions since their loss at Tottenham in November, but something will have to give this time.
Chelsea’s recent form: W W D W W W D W

This has to be the night for Spurs to make a bold statement and show their intent – no more ‘nearly’ results, no more undefeated in Cup competitions in 90 minutes, no defeat on penalties – it’s time for Spurs to defeat one of the ‘top’ teams, time for a Spurs’ success in one of these big games and progress to a semi-final tie against Blackburn Rovers.

Spurs in History - 9th March

9th March, 1953

Spurs 1 Birmingham City 0 F.A.Cup 6th Round 2nd Replay at Molineaux

Today everything must be instant - coffee, fast food, connection to the internet, mobile phones, penalty shoot-outs - but in 1953 there was time for replays and second replays and third replays or as many as were required to settle the tie. No quick fix as we have today - extra time and a penalty shoot-out.

While the League Cup in all its forms has already lost replays and Arsene Wenger may want rid of them in the FA Cup so that he can concentrate on other things of greater importance, 'the Arsenal end of season party' - the replay brought an added something to the competition as clubs battled it out over a number of games for the right to progress to the next round.

This tie against Birmingham City who were in the 2nd Division went to three games before Spurs went through to the semi-finals. The original match was at St Andrews where Spurs earned a 1-1 draw with a goal from Les Bennett. In the replay at White Hart Lane Bennett again scored and with Len Duquemin ensured a 2-2 draw after extra time. The third game was played in the Midlands at the neutral venue of Molineaux, Wolves ground, and Spurs won with a goal from Sonny Walters.

Spurs 4 Everton 3 FA Cup 5th Round Replay

Spurs were a 2nd Division side and the match in Liverpool had seen them score through Jimmy McCormick with five minutes remaining, only for Everton who were in the 1st Division, to equalise in the last minute.

The 5th Round Replay, on the following Monday, surpassed that for excitement as Spurs looked to be going out of the Cup until a dramatic comeback. The pitch had been flooded and conditions were poor but Everton took control and went into a two goal lead. Spurs scored through Johnny Morrison in the 27th minute but in the second half after a Morrison ‘goal’ was disallowed, Everton extended their lead. With seven minutes remaining, Everton were awarded a penalty but the referee changed his decision as Everton had taken a throw-in incorrectly. A minute later Morrison scored Spurs' second, then with two minutes remaining Joe Meek equalised with a great solo goal and in the last minute Morrison scored the winner to complete his hat-trick and an amazing come-back by Spurs.

A Cup Classic witnessed by 46,972 spectators.

Spurs in History - 21st February

21st February, 1979
Wrexham 2 Spurs 3 FA Cup 4th Round Replay
Spurs were finding it difficult to re-establish themselves in the 1st Division having won promotion the previous year and their Cup progress in January, 1979 was proving problematic. They had the good fortune to receive a home tie in both of the opening rounds but progress in the Cup was being achieved the hard way as they had needed a replay to overcome non-League, Altrincham in the previous Round. The replay win over Altrincham had been Spurs’ first FA Cup success for six seasons, since defeating another non-League side, Margate, in 1973 which had been Bill Nicholson’s last FA Cup win as manager.
Again, drawn at home in the 4th Round, Wrexham proved equally as difficult. Spurs and Wrexham shared six goals with the 2nd Division side earning a deserved 3-3 draw in the first game at White Hart Lane. Glenn Hoddle, Chris Jones and an own goal accounted for Spurs’ quota.
Wrexham were deserving of the replay which went to extra time and Spurs can be grateful to an unlikely hero in Chris Jones who scored a hat-trick to secure victory. This was Spurs' second hat-trick in consecutive replays to see Spurs through by 3-2.

Spurs in History - 6th January

Jimmy Greaves
6th January, 1962
Birmingham City 3 Spurs 3 (FA Cup 3rd Round)

This was another difficult tie for the Cup holders against 1st Division opposition, on a pitch that had been covered in snow for much of the previous week.

The ‘Double’ winning team of the previous season had been strengthened by the signing of Jimmy Greaves and the other changes saw Jones replacing Terry Dyson on the left with Terry Medwin playing on the right.  Les Allen was at centre forward with Bobby Smith losing his place for Greaves.

Spurs took a three goal lead by the 32nd minute through Greaves who scored the first and third goals, the second a header, with Cliff Jones scoring the second.  Birmingham, however, fought their way back into the game by scoring a minute later and then equalized with two second half goals.

Spurs won the replay 4 – 2, with goals from Medwin (2), Greaves and Allen.

Team: Brown, Baker, Henry, Blanchflower, Norman, Mackay, Medwin, White, Allen, Greaves, Jones.

6th January, 1883

The first ever Spurs goal was scored today in Hotspur FC's second match. Unfortunately, the name of the goal scorer is not recorded and further it was in a 1-8 defeat in a friendly against Latymer who were to become the club's main rivals over the next number of years.

9th March - Spurs in History

Nowadays the Carling Cup games have to be settled instantly - no replays - extra time - penalty kicks - game over.  Prior to this need for a quick result, FA Cup and League Cup games went to second and third replays as necessary. It caused fixture congestion and fatigue but eventually a winner was found.

In this 1953 FA Cup 6th Round tie Birmingham and Spurs went to a second replay.

The first game was 1-1 at St Andrews. Les Bennett scored Spurs goal.

The Replay at White Hart Lane ended 2-2 after extra time - Bennett and Len Duquemin scored.

The 2nd Replay at Molineaux on 9th March, 1953 - resulted in a Spurs win by 1-0 with a goal scored by Sonny Walters.

Unfortunately, Spurs Cup exploits ended in the next game, they lost the semi-final against Blackpool at Villa Park by 1-2.

1996 FA Cup 5th Round Replay.

Spurs 1 Nottingham Forest 1 (aet) (Forest won 3-1 on penalties)

This was the third game in this tie - the first game at Nottingham had to be abandoned after 15 minutes because of snow.  Supporters had a very difficult journey out of Nottingham on their way home after the game.

The game was re-scheduled and finished 2-2 - Chris Armstrong scoring both Spurs goals but Ian Woan scored two special goals for Forest.

The replay at White Hart Lane was again very close and ended 1-1 after extra time.  Teddy Sheringham scored for Spurs but when it came to the penalty shoot out - Spurs could only score once from their five penalties.  Forest scored three and progressed to the next round.

This was Spurs first Cup defeat on penalties.
