Spurs in History - 1st August

1st August, 1992

Glenavon 0 Spurs 1 (Pre-season Friendly)

Little of note occurred on this day, bringing me to a match arranged as part of the transfer of Gerard McMahon to Spurs. Terry Venables as chief guest opened the new stand that the club had just built and Spurs set about winning the game with a goal from Vinny Samways.

A good passing movement between Nayim and Durie sent Samways clear and with just the goalkeeper to beat he side-footed home.

McMahon played against his old team mates and went on to make twenty League and Cup appearances for Spurs (including 8 as substitute), scoring once before being transferred to Stoke City.

Spurs in History - 10th May

10th May, 1998

Spurs 1 Southampton 1 Premiership

Job completed, Spurs said farewell to Jurgen Klinsmann for the second time in three seasons. This second period had not brought the same success as previously but he had scored six goals in Spurs final three games of the season which had helped ensure Premiership survival.
Klinsmann signed off from White Hart Lane by scoring Spurs equaliser.

Also leaving Tottenham that day were Gary Mabbutt and David Howells who had served Spurs loyally over many seasons.

On this day in 1995, a former player became immortalised in Spurs folklore with his winning goal in the last minute of extra time for Real Zaragossa in the European Cup Winners’ Cup Final against Arsenal – it was, ‘Nayim from the halfway line.’

Spurs in History - 7th March

7th March, 1993
Manchester City 2 Spurs 4 F.A.Cup 6th Round

A memorable game, not just because Spurs won through to a semi-final tie against Arsenal, but because of the football that Spurs played, the hat-trick scored by Nayim and the fact that the game had to be stopped due to a pitch invasion by the City fans.

City went into the lead but Spurs were ahead at halftime through goals from Nayim and Steve Sedgeley. In the second half Spurs took control with Nayim scoring twice. Andy Turner had a goal disallowed and direct from the free-kick City went the length of the pitch and scored.

This was the signal for the City supporters to spill onto the pitch. The game was halted and the players left the pitch for thirteen minutes while the mounted police restored order.
