Spurs in History - 25th August

25th August, 1990

Spurs 3 Manchester City 1

The World Cup in Italy during the summer brought Paul Gascoigne to the attention of the world in general and the nation in particular. His play had inspired the nation and he came home a hero. The phenomenon known as Gazza had been born and so there was incredible media attention for this game as Gary Lineker and Gascoigne appeared in the opening game of the season.

Both played a major part in this victory as Gazza opened the scoring and Lineker scored the other two.

Spurs in History - 8th July

8th July, 1990

In the World Cup Final in Italy, Germany defeated Argentina by one goal to nil.

A member of the German team was Jurgen Klinsmann who four years later would sign for Spurs at a time when they were at their lowest ebb following the severe punishment imposed by the Football Association.

In that one season at White Hart Lane he would lift Spurs to unexpected heights but was to leave them dashed as he moved on twelve months later.
