1st April - Spurs in History

1st April 1992

Gary's No April 'Fool'

Spurs 3 West Ham United 0

Spurs had a terrible run of results through the first three months of the year. They had won at Coventry (2-1) on New Year's Day but didn't win again in the League until the last game in March, 4-3 at home to Coventry. From 10 League games, they earned three points and only scored four goals. The Cup competitions weren't much better - a scoreless early exit to Aston Villa in a replay at Tottenham in the FA Cup (3rd Round), defeat in the European Cup Winners' Cup to Feyenoord, again without scoring, and while progress was made to the semi-final of the League Cup, defeat at home in the second leg ended their interest in that competition as well.

The previous week's win against Coventry came thanks to a goal from Gary Lineker and a Gordon Durie hat-trick. Against west ham at White Hart Lane, it was Lineker who took the honours with a hat-trick.

Normal service was resumed a few days later when Aston Villa won 5-2 at the Lane. Lineker and an own goal gave Spurs the lead but Villa came storming back.

Peter Shreeve had been appointed manager at the start of the season when Terry Venables took more responsible in running the club as Chief Executive. Shreeve's hold on the position was too be short lived, being removed at the end of the season.

Spurs 3 West Ham 0 This must be a good day to play West Ham - another three goals from Terry Fenwick (pen), Nayim and Paul Stewart. This defeat helped push the visitors further towards relegation.

1st April, 1967

Spurs 2 Liverpool 1

Spurs were in an excellent sequence of League and Cup games. Undefeated since mid-January, this win was their fourth successive League victory and they went on to win the next two League games as well. The season ended with Spurs in third position and as F.A.Cup winners. Both goals were scored by Jimmy Greaves, the second coming direct from a corner with the Liverpool defender on the near post ducking under the ball.
